  • by

Karnataka, the land of rich culture and tradition, is known for its colorful and vibrant wedding customs. From the pre-wedding rituals to the post-wedding ceremonies, each tradition holds significant meaning and significance. In this blog, we will explore the fascinating wedding traditions of Karnataka.

Pre-Wedding Rituals

The wedding celebrations in Karnataka usually begin with the Nischay Tamulam ceremony, where both the families meet and exchange betel leaves and nuts as a symbol of acceptance and commitment. This is followed by the Haldi ceremony, where turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom’s body to enhance their beauty and ward off evil spirits.

Another pre-wedding ritual is the Kashi Yatra, where the groom pretends to go to Kashi to become a sanyasi. The bride’s father then persuades him to come back and marry his daughter. The Dev Karya ceremony is performed by the groom’s family, where they seek blessings from the family deity.

Wedding Day Customs

On the wedding day, the groom arrives at the bride’s house riding a horse or an elephant in the Baraat ceremony. The bride’s mother welcomes him with an Aarti, and the couple exchanges garlands in the Jaimala ceremony. The bride and groom then take their vows in the Kanyadaan ceremony, where the father gives away his daughter to the groom.

The most important ritual is the Saat Phere or the seven rounds around the holy fire, where the couple takes vows to love and cherish each other for a lifetime. This is followed by the Sindoor and Mangalsutra ceremony, where the groom applies sindoor on the bride’s forehead and ties a mangalsutra around her neck, signifying their marital status.
